What is Alternative Payment (AP)?
The Alternative Payment Program offers child care subsidies for children through 12 years of age or up to 21 with exceptional needs. AP makes full or partial payment to qualified families whose income does not exceed the State Median Income Level (see below) and who have a need for child care.
Reasons for needing child care include:
- Employment
- Vocational training
- Seeking employment
- Seeking housing
- Incapacitated
- Child Protective Services
- Referred by a legally qualified professional
- Participating in CalWORKs

AP is funded through the California Department of Education, Child Development Division.
Proof of residency in San Diego County is required for all children enrolled with AP.
